The Central Florida Expressway Authority (CFX) has selected Alignment 2A as the preferred route for the SR 417 Sanford Airport Connector, raising alarm among Sanford residents and property owners.
The newly selected alignment would require the use of eminent domain, a legal process that allows government agencies to take private property for public use — such as roads, utilities, or schools — so long as the property owner is compensated. While intended for infrastructure improvements, the process can be highly disruptive for residents and businesses forced to relocate.
In this case, Alignment 2A could result in the displacement of homes and businesses — including one homestead with roots dating back to the 1800s. For many, what was once a distant concern has now become a very real threat.
The project is part of a long-range transportation strategy aimed at improving access to Orlando Sanford International Airport and reducing congestion on Lake Mary Boulevard. CFX projections show that, without this new road, Lake Mary Boulevard could carry nearly 37,000 vehicles per day by 2050. Officials estimate that Alignment 2A could reduce that traffic load by nearly 50%.
Despite those potential benefits, many in the community are concerned about the immediate cost to existing neighborhoods, small businesses, and generational landowners.
