Recently, Orlando District 5 Commissioner Shaniqua “Shan” Rose submitted what can only be described as campaign promotional material to The Orlando Voice, requesting we publish it as legitimate news content. While we respect Commissioner Rose’s service to District 5, we cannot—and will not—blur the fundamental line between journalism and political advertising.
The Problem with Unverified Claims
The submission reads like a campaign flyer, complete with sweeping claims of achievement that lack the basic documentation any credible news organization would require before publication. Commissioner Rose’s office claims to have invested “over $1.2 million into career training and workforce development programs,” helped “hundreds of District 5 residents find employment,” and distributed “over 3,000 pounds of food to families in need.”
These are substantial claims that, if true, would represent significant accomplishments worthy of news coverage. However, our research found no independent verification of these specific figures from city records, budget documents, or other news sources that typically cover such major community investments.
The Timeline Problem
Perhaps most concerning is the timeline issue. Commissioner Rose was sworn into office on June 24, 2024, meaning she has served approximately 12 months in what is essentially an interim position. Her current term ends on January 12, 2026, as she was elected in a special election to replace Regina Hill, who was suspended following her arrest.
The submission’s language suggests years of accumulated achievements, but the reality is that Commissioner Rose has had less than a year to implement any major programs—making the claimed scope of accomplishments even more questionable without proper documentation.
What Real Journalism Requires
At The Orlando Voice, we believe in holding all public officials accountable, regardless of party affiliation or political position. When officials make claims about their achievements, we verify them. When they announce major initiatives, we follow up to see if they were actually implemented. When they cite specific numbers, we ask for receipts.
This isn’t about Commissioner Rose personally—it’s about maintaining the integrity of independent journalism in Orlando. Every elected official, from the mayor to city commissioners, should expect their claims to be scrutinized and verified before appearing in legitimate news coverage.
The Broader Issue
This incident highlights a troubling trend in local politics: the attempt to use legitimate news outlets as free campaign advertising platforms. While Commissioner Rose has every right to promote her accomplishments, she also has the responsibility to provide verifiable evidence of those accomplishments when seeking news coverage.
We encourage Commissioner Rose—and all Orlando officials—to provide transparent documentation of their initiatives. City budget allocations, program receipts, official records of workforce development programs, and documented food distribution efforts would go a long way toward supporting the claims made in the submission.
Our Commitment
The Orlando Voice remains committed to covering District 5 and Commissioner Rose’s actual accomplishments with the same rigor we apply to all local officials. We welcome documented achievements, verified program results, and transparent governance. What we won’t publish is promotional material disguised as news.
Orlando residents deserve better than campaign literature masquerading as journalism. They deserve independently verified reporting that helps them make informed decisions about their representatives.
Commissioner Rose, we’re still waiting for the documentation. Orlando voters are too.
